Build a One-Page Marketing Plan for Your Small Business

A simple framework to decide where your next marketing dollar and hour should go.

By YourWebsiteMarketingService Team

Most small business marketing fails from scattered effort, not lack of effort. A one-page plan forces the trade-offs into the open so you can stop reacting and start compounding.

Step 1: Work backwards from revenue

Start with the revenue target, divide by average job value to get jobs needed, divide by your close rate to get leads needed, then by your conversion rate to get traffic needed. Now you have a number to plan against instead of a feeling.

  • Annual revenue target
  • Average customer value and repeat rate
  • Lead-to-customer close rate
  • Visitor-to-lead conversion rate
  • Required monthly traffic and leads

Step 2: Define one ideal customer

Not a demographic — a situation. "Homeowners in the northern suburbs with a 15-year-old roof after storm season" is a plan. "Adults 35-65" is not. Every message, offer, and channel choice follows from this.

Step 3: Write your one-sentence offer

We help [customer] achieve [outcome] without [the thing they dread], backed by [proof or guarantee]. If you cannot say it in one sentence, your ads and homepage will not be able to either.

Step 4: Pick three channels — no more

  1. One channel that compounds: SEO, content, or reviews.
  2. One channel that buys speed: paid search or paid social.
  3. One channel you already own: email, past customers, or referrals.

The owned channel is almost always the most profitable and the most neglected. Emailing your past customers four times a year costs nearly nothing and reliably produces work.

Step 5: Fix the leaks before adding traffic

  • How fast do you respond to a new enquiry? Under five minutes changes everything.
  • Do you follow up more than once? Most sales happen after the third touch.
  • Is your quote easy to say yes to, with clear next steps?
  • Do you ask for a review and a referral every single time?

Step 6: Review monthly, replan quarterly

Once a month, review leads by source, cost per booked job, and your top five landing pages. Once a quarter, decide what to double down on and what to kill. Protect the plan from every shiny new tactic that appears in between.

Three channels done properly for a year will beat ten channels tried for a month.
