10 Google Business Profile Tweaks That Actually Move Rankings
Small optimizations that make a big difference in local pack visibility.
By YourWebsiteMarketingService Team
We audit dozens of Google Business Profiles a year. The same ten fixes come up over and over — and most of them take under an hour to implement.
1. Fix your primary category first
Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal you control. "Contractor" and "Roofing Contractor" produce completely different map results. Check what the top three ranked competitors use, then choose the most specific category that honestly describes your core revenue.
2. Add secondary categories deliberately
Add one secondary category for each service you genuinely offer and want leads for. Do not add categories you cannot fulfil — irrelevant categories can suppress the profile for your main term.
3. Write out every service with descriptions
The Services section is under-used and directly feeds keyword relevance. List each service individually and write a short, plain-English description of what it includes and who it is for.
4. Post weekly — offers beat updates
- Offer posts with a clear discount and expiry get the most clicks.
- Event posts work well for classes, open houses, and seasonal services.
- Add a call-to-action button on every post; "Call now" and "Book" convert best.
5. Upload real photos, not stock
Google reads image metadata and users trust authenticity. Photos taken on a phone at the job site consistently outperform polished stock imagery for engagement, and engagement feeds prominence.
6. Respond to every single review
Within 24 hours, in your own voice. Thank the good ones specifically. For negative reviews, acknowledge, apologize once, and move the conversation offline with a phone number. Future customers read your replies more closely than the complaints.
7. Seed the Q&A section
You are allowed to ask and answer your own questions. Add the eight questions your phone team hears most — pricing ranges, service areas, emergency availability, warranty terms — and upvote the best answers.
8. Get your hours and special hours right
Wrong holiday hours cause bad reviews and lost calls. Set special hours a month ahead. If you take emergency calls, say so in the description rather than showing 24-hour opening you cannot honour.
9. Use the products and booking features
Products give you extra indexed real estate with images and prices. Booking links reduce friction to zero for service businesses — every removed step is measurable revenue.
10. Keep the website link pointed somewhere relevant
Send profile traffic to a page that matches the intent — often a service or location page, not always the homepage. Tag the link with UTM parameters so you can prove how much revenue the profile drives.
A profile updated weekly beats a profile that was perfect once, eighteen months ago.
